:: DIY Refinished Chalkboard Menu ::
I’m terrible at menu planning and grocery shopping. I usually buy the same things every week and hope I can put together a few meals for us! You would think with Pinterest and all the cook books I own, I would be better. And I’m trying to be! I thought having our weekly menu in front of me everyday would help. I already had everything I needed for this project so it didn’t cost me a dime. My favorite kind of project!
A few months ago I bought a chalkboard pen and used it on the board hanging in the kitchen to countdown the days until our wedding. Apparently you can’t use those pens on every chalk surface! It was permanent. I even tested a few other chalk pens and they also did not wipe off. So the first step was to refinish my chalkboard.
I used a can of spray chalkboard paint that I had leftover from a previous project. I masked around the board edges and followed the instructions on the back of the can. I did 3 light coats, waiting 30 minutes in between.
The next day I removed the masking tape and prepped the surface for use by drawing all over the board with chalk and wiping clean with a dry cloth.
I hung our new menu board on the wall in the dining area next to our main door. This way hubby will see it on his way out to work and I’ll see it and remember to pull things out of the freezer if necessary. This week is a little different since Monday was a holiday but I plan on writing out our dinners on Sundays and grocery shopping on Monday. I’m feeling much more organized already!
The best part is, I can now use my chalkboard pens! They easily wipe off my new spray-painted chalk surface.
* I purchased my chalkboard from Joann Fabrics a few years ago.
